Which filter fits which engine

• 90915-YZZE1 — petrol: Corolla (1ZR/2ZR), Camry (2AR), Yaris (1NZ/2NZ), RAV4, Prius. Thread 3/4-16 UNF, 75 mm tall.
• 90915-YZZD4 — diesel: Hilux, Hiace, Fortuner, Prado and Land Cruiser with 1KD, 2KD and 1GD engines. Taller, larger diameter, higher capacity.
• Always confirm against your chassis number. Two vehicles with the same model name and year can use different filters where engine options differ between markets.

Why the diesel filter is not just a bigger petrol filter

Diesel combustion produces far more soot, and soot is what loads a filter. The diesel filter has more media surface area and a different bypass valve setting to handle that load without going into bypass early. Fitting a petrol-specification filter to a diesel engine is a false economy: once the filter bypasses, unfiltered oil circulates and the wear happens quietly.

How often to change it in Nigeria

Toyota service intervals assume European fuel quality and milder ambient temperatures. In practice, the vehicles we see on Nigerian fuel and roads are better served by a 5,000 km or six-month interval, whichever comes first. Short-trip city driving counts as severe service — oil never reaches full operating temperature, condensation builds, and the filter works harder.

If your Hilux spends its week in Abuja traffic doing 15 km trips, 5,000 km arrives in about four months. Change on the six-month mark even if the odometer has not got there.

Change the filter, and the oil, and the drain plug washer

An oil change is three items, not one: oil, filter and the drain plug crush washer. The washer is a single-use seal that stops the slow drip that becomes an oil stain on the driveway and a low oil warning six weeks later. It costs almost nothing and is the most commonly skipped part of the job.

Signs the filter is being changed too late

• Oil pressure light lingers a fraction longer on cold start than it used to.
• Oil on the dipstick turns dark very quickly after a fresh change.
• The filter you remove is unusually heavy or the media has distorted.
• Top-end rattle in the first two seconds after a cold start — often a filter with a failed anti-drainback valve or a filter being changed too slowly.

For most Toyota owners in Abuja and Lagos we recommend Toyota Genuine 90915-YZZE1 or 90915-YZZD4 with Toyota Genuine 5W-30 or diesel 15W-40 oil, changed at 5,000 km or six months, plus a new drain plug washer every time. It is the cheapest maintenance line on the vehicle and the one that protects the most expensive component in it.
